Although any activity that takes a driver’s attention off the road is unsafe, texting while driving is particularly dangerous because if meets all three of the criteria for distracted driving, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

  1. Eyes off the road
  2. Hands off the wheel
  3. Mind off driving

Despite its dangers, texting while driving is common. According to a study by Zendrive, drivers use their phones 88% of the time they are on the road.

Texting while driving may seem like a harmless act – the driver is just reading a line of text or sending off a 1-word reply – it only takes a few seconds. However, simply looking away from the road for as little as 5 seconds is like driving the length of a football field while blindfolded. During that time, traffic may have slowed, a pedestrian may have crossed the street, or any number of objects could have gotten in the driver’s path, and a collision with the obstacle may be unavoidable.

In 2015, the National Safety Council (NSC) reported that 27% of car accidents were caused by drivers on their phones – either texting or engaging in a call. The NSC also noted that texting drivers were 8 times more likely to get into an accident than drivers who were not on their phones (drivers talking on their phones are 4 times more likely to get into an accident).

Laws Banning Texting While Driving

To combat the dangers of texting while driving, many states have passed laws banning the activity. Under Oklahoma Statute §47-11-901c, which came into effect in 2015, drivers are prohibited from using a cell phone to read, write, or send text messages. Any person caught violating this law could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $500.
